The men’s basketball team beat back William & Mary’s strangely-named Tribe Saturday to win 68-53. For more coverage, check out Tony Francavilla’s article about Saturday’s game. Maybe you’ll find out why the Hoyas can’t beat a zone.

  1. Dave says:

King William III and Queen Mary II were sovereignty in England, not the Netherlands.

A Tribe is a social group existing before the development of, or outside of, states in the context of US history. Its a rather clever moniker W&M adopted after the NCAA ruled their old name offensive (the Indians) since the college was around before the US was.

You’re right that William and Mary did have sovereignty over England. But William was stadtholder of the Dutch Republic before being king of England.

Tribe is better than the Indians, but it reminds me of the also offensive (or just bad) Tribes 2.
