Happy DPS “Protective Equipment” Day

If things seemed a little grimmer, a little more intense today, it’s because DPS finally started carrying batons and OC spray (basically Mace). In its infinite wisdom, Georgetown’s press release calls that
“Protective equipment” is obviously PR double-talk, but I don’t see why they have to couch batons and OC spray in such covert language. I know some people are disappointed neither batons nor OC spray are semi-automatic, the two weapons seem pretty reasonable for a campus security force in DC. If the officers have had the purported 24 hours of training, DPS can arm itself like that, and hopefully someone with video camera will be nearby if it all goes wrong.
Not all is bad in DPS-land, though. For one thing, the new DPS bike patrol rocks. They have slick new uniforms, and Officer Maurice (Vox Populi’s favorite DPSer) seems to be the proverbial leader of the pack.
