The baller-wannabe

You’ve probably heard by now that Marine Corps heavyweight and former NATO Commander James L. Jones (SFS ‘66) is a top contender to be Barack Obama’s national security adviser. On Saturday, the Washington Post reported that sources said the four-star general had moved to “the top of [Obama's] list.”

What you might not have heard is that he used to play basketball for the Hoyas. It’s true, although Jones appears to have been a little more Bryon Jansen than Jessie Sapp while he was at Georgetown: he only spent time on the court during one season (1963-64), and he didn’t start in a majority of games. Let’s hope he handles national security better than he played ball.

  1. Give it a break who really thinks about something as assnine as what your spewing.

  2. Anna, even with General Jones had averaged 40 and 20 as a Hoya, he STILL would not have been a beast of the Big East. Why? The league was not around for another 15 years or so.

Good post, just playing nit-picker with your title.

  3. Sorry, even IF General Jones…

  4. Paul — I thought it was interesting. Sorry to hear you didn’t.

Bailey — I had a feeling my basketball ignorance would show itself somehow. Thanks for the heads up.
