GW takes a page out of the Ben and Matt playbook

Amused by the implosion of the GW student government, I decided to check out their website and found a rather familiar sounding section called “I Love GW But…” As Georgetown students may recall, that’s a slightly modified version of the slogan that last year’s GUSA execs Ben Shaw (COL ’08) and Matt Appenfeller (COL ’08) used while campaigning.

The only thing the “I Love GW But…” section says right now is “Coming Soon,” presumably because the student government is busy self-distructing in hilarious, back-biting fashion. But I say if GW’s going to channel Ben and Matt’s campaign, why stop there? Here’s a tip for anyone looking to replace the beleaguered Vishal Aswani next year: a sure-fire way to win is to take the latest Andy Samberg masterpiece and modify it to fit a student government context.

  1. The GW Student Association government isn’t actually imploding (in any way that it hasn’t been “imploding” in slow motion for many years). Self-important buffoonery and problems with cooperation are an unfortunate, long-standing tradition down here in Foggy Bottom. The recent unpleasantness is really just a hiccup compared to past troubles. For example, Aswani is the first male GW Student Association President in four years who wasn’t involved in a sex scandal.

    GO ASWANI GO.

  2. “For example, Aswani is the first male GW Student Association President in four years who wasn’t involved in a sex scandal.”

    …so far.

  3. It would be helpful if you did your research before posting on this blog. “I Love GW But…” originated with David Wilkinson and Brand Kroeger, who ran for President and Executive Vice President respectively in spring 2007.

Maybe Ben and Matt stole the idea from David and Brand’s website?

  4. I guess the history of sex scandals might make a campaign video prominently featuring the word “jizz” seem a bit inappropriate then. Pity.

Sounds like the GW SA totally puts GUSA to shame. Our idea of a scandal is messing up instant run-off voting…

  5. Humphrey: Ben and Matt ran in the spring of 2007 as well, so I guess it’s still unclear who’s can take credit for the idea. If “I Love GW But…” is a year and a half old why does it still say “Coming Soon” on the website? That seems like quite a lag, even for someone who’s accustomed to inefficient student government.
