The wild wild Whigs

Saturday

Dan Auerbach

Black Keys frontman Dan Auerbach released his debut solo album Keep it Hid earlier this month.  The San Francisco Chronicle called Auerbach “a master at creating surprising, shadowy textures with reverb and repeated riffs,” and you can see him live at the 9:30 Club on Saturday.  Doors open at 8:00.

The Bowerbirds

WGBT Georgetown Radio is hosting a free concert tonight with The Bowerbirds in Bulldog Alley.  Georgetown’s own the Reconquista will be opening and David Karsten Daniels will be playing a set in between.  Expect to see WGBT DJ Talent in between sets and the soothing melodies of the Bowerbirds until late in the evening.

Monday

Blitzen Trapper

Last November, I made the trip to Baltimore to see Iron and Wine.  As an added bonus, I caught the end of a show by Blitzen Trapper.  Although the the band can suffer from a lack of focus with six musicians, their unique folk-rock sound is worth the trip to U St.  Tickets are only $13 and the music starts at 8:00.

Wednesday

The Whigs

Before signing to ATO Records in 2006, Rolling Stone wrote that The Whigs “may well be the best unsigned band in America.”  After years of relentless touring, the band is receiving the recognition they deserve with appearances on The Late Show and Conan O’Brien.  Trances Arc and Dead Confederate will be opening the show at the Black Cat.

Friday-Saturday

Ani Difranco

The devotion of Ani Difranco’s fans is evidenced by the fact that tickets for her Friday show have already sold out.  If you want to see Difranco on Saturday, expect her trademark fingerpicking and politically charged lyrics.  Ticket prices are steep at $40, but arriving early will guarantee a good spot.  Doors open at 8:00.
