Issue Rundown: Political Profs on Parade
Posted by: Molly Redden in Leisure, News, Sports, Vox Populi, tags: Issue RundownWonkish is as wonkish does! Here goes:
In Features, Clare Malone exhaustively profiles Georgetown’s countless political profs. Sure, you’ve heard Blue & Gray tour guides impress moms and dads with anecdotes about “when my professor went on CNN”. But Malone’s got the deets on just how Georgetown scoops up political heavy-hitters:
“[SFS Dean Robert] Gallucci put his government connections to use once he became Dean of the SFS, helping to orchestrate the hiring of heavy-hitters in the realm of international affairs, perhaps most notably former Secretary of State Madeline Albright. ‘When [Albright] became Secretary of State and she was in her third year or so, I started lobbying with her early on. I wanted to be first in line,’ Gallucci said. ”
In Voices, Anna Bank mulls over the nickname “the Georgetown Cuddler,” whether the name is insensitive or not, and whether or not that’s the right question to ask: “Cracking a Cuddler joke might not be meant to make light of the crimes. It’s possible that it’s just too difficult or uncomfortable to think of any other way to talk about what’s happening.” Catharsis? You tell me!
In Leisure, Rachel Sadon reviews the Mask & Bauble’s Srping show Jekyll & Hyde. “Technically, Jekyll & Hyde is a stunning success; sultry lighting and rain pour at exactly the right time with gifted musicians playing behind the scenes …. The production is further buoyed by a group of actors that clearly enjoy each other—the musical is often at its best when they are all on stage together.”
The Voice’s Editorial Board takes the District to task for its total failure to combat the spread of HIV/AIDS, which now infects 3 percent of D.C. adults. Writes the board, “The District’s HIV/AIDS crisis has reached a breaking point: city officials and non-profit organizations will need to make a concerted efforts to turn back the swelling tide of new cases.”
And finally, in Sports, Tim Shine reports the Hoyas’ loss to Baylor with the same tone Dad used when the vet put Fido out of his misery. “It’s finally over. Georgetown’s extended downward spiral ended Wednesday night, as the Hoyas fell to Baylor 74-72 in the first round of the NIT. The game was a microcosm of the Hoyas’ season, with a tantalizing first half performance giving way to a late collapse.”
