Lunch with the boss is a bold move.
The Best of the Best
Rescue Me “Disease” Tommy continues to deceive his family about the fact that he is drinking again. Sean is recovering from the surgery to remove his cancer.*
Better Off Ted “You Are the Boss of Me” Ted’s daughter is off in New York for the week with his ex-wife, so Ted decides to bond with his employees for something to do.
Burn Notice “Fearless Leader” Michael decides to offer up a gesture of goodwill to Detective Paxson, in the hopes of getting her off his back.*
*Both Rescue Me and Burn Notice are on 8 day delays before showing up on Hulu.
WARNING: After the jump, THERE BE SPOILERS!
Rescue Me There were two moments in this episode that just blew me away: the opening scene of the guys falling through the floor in the fire and Sean’s song and dance number about being a vegetable. These two scenes just go to show that Rescue Me has some big brassy balls. It is easily the most daring show on television today. Of course, many times that daring does not pan out and we get something ridiculous (like all of Tommy’s interactions with the women in his life this week), but that is always the danger of the power hitter. As spectacular as the home run is, they also look spectacularly stupid swinging for the fences and missing.
Better Off Ted It’s great to see that the funniest show of the year is back for six more episodes this summer. The more you watch this show, the more the performances grow on you, especially Portia de Rossi who is perhaps rivaling Lindsay Bluth with her work here. And apart from the performances, the faux-commercials for Veridian Dynamics just get better every week.
Burn Notice Not as strong as last week’s outing, but still pretty great. The strength this week didn’t come from the A-plot, but rather from the B-plot of Sam being audited, due to “something about deducting mojitos.” Unfortunately, Detective Paxson is a painfully boring character, who sadly doesn’t seem like she’ll be getting more interesting or less screen time as the season progresses. And it was her being everywhere all the time that really made me pull back from the A-plot this week. I did love the robbery of the dry cleaners and Michael subtly nudging Tommy towards the right way to rob a store, though.

TV special “Virtuality” deserves a mention here, too. Fox’s TV movie (aka not good enough for a series) that aired on Friday was a fantastic addition to the increasingly mainstream sci-fi genre. Watch it on Hulu– http://www.hulu.com/watch/80030/virtuality
