Voice’s On-Campus Choices: Paris, politics, Potter and more

This, but on your coffee table.
A Celebration of Paris
Coffee table books are known for a few things. They’re known for their bargain prices at retailers like Barnes and Noble and for either placing together images of wolves in snowy terrain, or for collecting the fiction of Edgar Allen Poe into a large text format. These are the two basic categories, but my joking demeanor doesn’t merit ill reception of the art.
Georgetown Alumna Leslie J. Little has put together an award winning coffee table book of her own on the subject of Paris, the City of Light. Combining timeless Parisian photographs with the insights of poets, composers, and writers who have, in a sense, created the history of Paris over time.
The book, entitled Paris Icons, has been awarded national honors and has received the “Gold Medal for Most Outstanding Book Design” in 2009. Head over to the Riggs Library tomorrow, October 20th, from 4:30 pm to 6:30 pm to meet with the author and partake in the alumna’s book signing. To RSVP email bmf43@georgetown.edu or call 202-687-4259.
A Political Outing
Of all the various gay rights issues currently percolating in the political arena, perhaps none is as divisive as outing closeted conservatives. Tonight, blogger Mike Rogers of blogactive.com, well-known for outing the likes of Senator Larry Craig (R-Idaho) and Congressman David Drier (R-Calif.), will be leading a discussion about outing and political homophobia. The event starts at 8 p.m. in Healy 104.
Cocalero and the War on Drugs
The District of Columbia’s film showcase from Latin America, Spain, and Portugal are presenting the documentary Cocalero Bolivia this Wednesday, October 21st, at 12:30 p.m. The documentary features the story of an Aymara Indian named Evo who travels through the Andes and the Amazon in jeans and sneakers, all in an effort to become Bolivia’s first indigenous president. You must RSVP here before the attending the event, which will be held in ICC room 462.
Six Characters in Search of an Author
If you missed your chance to see the Department of Performing Arts’ Six Characters in Search of an Author last week, you’ll have your chance to catch up this week. The show is running from October 21st through the 24th at 8:00 p.m., and with a reduced student ticket price of only $7 on Wednesday and Thursday and $10 on Friday and Saturday (as opposed to the general admission of $15 and $18) it is hard deal to pass up.
The compelling story of six mysterious strangers who appear at a rehearsal unannounced, narrative unfolds and the line between reality and fiction become increasingly blurred. Violence and madness are supposed to play a role too, which is always entertaining.
Harry Potter and the ________
It’s been a few weeks since we’ve made note of the grand opportunity that Georgetown Program Board offers to students: free movies! This week students will have the chance to see Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. For those of you that are counting, that would be number six of seven (or six of eight, considering that the last book will be split into two films).
But we’re almost there, having grown with Potter ourselves it seems, and the end is in sight. So if you missed seeing this blockbuster hit this summer, GPB will be showing it in the ICC Auditorium on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 7:30 p.m. and 11:30 p.m.
Spoiler: Dumbledore dies. WHAT?!
