Vox had no trouble getting a sense of what kind of a person Josh Rodriguez (COL `11) was: the Texas native used the words “romantic” and “chivalry” no less than twice in his Date Lab Georgetown application.

Top it off with “want a relationship where I have a deep emotional bond” and “I am … well-mannered” and you’ve got yourself a Southern Gentleman—and a rather handsome one, at that. “On the physical side, I try to sculpt my image after Gerard Butler’s portrayal of King Leonidas in the movie 300,” he wrote.

We thought he might work out well with Amy Chambliss (NHS `12), who “genuinely care[s] about other people’s happiness” and typically goes for guys who come from completely different cultural backgrounds. Both are into playing music and romantic first dates on the order of long walks on the beach, and both use some form of the phrase “work hard play hard” to describe their party aesthetic.

On Sunday in UG, Chambliss ordered up an iced coffee, while Rodriguez got a chocolate chip bagel and a mocha smoothie. (“I went all out,” he explained).

Then, for about an hour, they chatted about Mexico (where they had both spent the summer, but in different locations), Reventon (the Latina American showcase they realized had both participated in last year), and guitars (they both play).

“We actually had a lot of things in common,” he said.

They didn’t exchange numbers at the end, but Chambliss was optimistic that they’d keep in touch:

“I hope we stay friends. We got along really well. I’m not sure if it’s going to turn into anything, but we’ll see.”

Later in the day, via Facebook message, she asked Rodriguez whether he’d be interested in in meeting up later in the week.

“She is definitely someone who is great to hang out with,” Rodriguez said. “Now as to whether there might be any romantic interest, to be honest, for my interests, she was a very nice girl, but we should probably just be friends.”

At least he was chivalrously honest.
