Date Lab Georgetown: Impressionable Strangers

Kelly McAlester (SFS ‘13) and Constantine Petallides (SFS ‘13)
First impressions of a new place can be very similar to first impressions of a new relationship. When a freshman steps on campus for the first time, their new setting could turn them on or off. This week, Vox decided that it wanted both daters to be extremely familiar with that judgment call, and reserved this week’s couple strictly for the Class of 2013.
So, will a boy who “can discuss things on the TMZ and CSPAN ends of the spectrum with the same level of expertise” win over our girl, who likes “guys who are intelligent but at the same time willing to listen to other people’s ideas?” Will she be funny enough to satisfy his love of comedy?
Constantine Petallides (SFS ‘13) was seated before Kelly McAlester (SFS ‘13) approached the table. “He seemed like we could get along,” recalls Kelly, also noting Constantine’s unique and appealing name as part of her first impression. They began to talk about the general topics, including what they liked so far about Georgetown. Then, the conversation started to get interesting.
“Apparently, we’re both Team Edward. So, that was the first stepping stone,” Constantine remembered. Unfortunately, the two didn’t quite step into their roles as Bella and Jacob. Instead, they ended up more like Hermione and Harry.
“He’s a big Harry Potter fan. I’m not a big Harry Potter fan,” Kelly commented. “He’s part Italian, and I’m taking Italian, so we talked about that. Not everyone can speak Italian, so that was cool.”
When the conversation drifted from leisure reading and back to school, Constantine recollects sharing their Economics woes, “Neither of us used RateMyProfessor. We both regretted it.”
In the end, when asked whether he thought they would hang out again, he responded “Possibly…yeah. On purpose, probably not.”
Perhaps his ideal date of a “classy Italian restaurant followed by either a fashion show, gala, auction, or charity casino event” would have sent romantic sparks flying a little higher than the coffee did.

“The two agreed that there was no spark.”
This is a travesty!
[...] Rational Student either bemoaned a missed opporunity for love or told Vox what he thought about the voyeuristic Date Lab: “This is a travesty!” [...]
“Apparently, we’re both Team Edward. So, that was the first stepping stone,”
Now that’s a foundation for a lasting relationship. Maybe they can discuss that at the charity casino event.
