Concert Calendar: The Walkmen, The Antlers, G Love
The Walkmen w/ Tennis
Friday, December 3, 9:30 Club (sold out), doors at 8 p.m.
The Walkmen came up through the New York rock scene with a fresh sound filled with chords, beats, and vocals like you’ve never heard before. The Walkmen’s music is world-weary, yet genuinely dramatic. While they made it big in the New York garage rock scene their personal style is far from grunge. They keep things innovative by mixing classical instruments (such as the upright piano) with new sounds and adaptations. Rock fans should not miss this concert.
Saturday, December 4, Black Cat ($15), doors at 9 p.m.
With intimate and empathetic lyrics, The Antlers is known for its poignant subject matter. Similar to Bon Iver without the folk-edge, the Antlers unravel tracks and build towards crescendos, which suggest hope amidst some (admittedly) dark lyrics. Expect an emotionally powerful concert.
Sunday, December 5, Black Cat ($10), doors at 9 p.m.
A British band with an ear for technical details, Stornoway is a folk-pop band known for its whimsical edge. Although the band hasn’t gained the critical acclaim of Noah and the Whale or Mumford and Sons, their music is still of high caliber. Representing a unique niche, Stornoway is an up and coming talent.
Saturday, December 11, 9:30 Club ($40), doors at 8 p.m.
As one of the minds behind the Parliament-Funkadelic collective, George Clinton is a one-of-a-kind funk artist an noted influence on many rock and punk musicians. Make no mistake, Clinton is music legend. A buzz has already started on campus for this concert so I would suggest getting your tickets as soon as possible.
Mike Green Fundraiser w/ G Love and Special Sauce
Monday, December 13, 9:30 Club ($50), doors at 8 p.m.
Mike Green of the Washington Capitals is holding a fundraiser to benefit So Kids Can and the Arlington Food Assistance Center. G Love and Special Sauce is a Philadelphia-based trio who plays chill music that is a mix of R&B, soul, blues, funk, and rock. This will be a fun concert if you’re longing for lazy days of summer.
