In an email sent to East Campus residents at 8:30 p.m., Executive Director of Student Housing Patrick Killilee announced that PEPCO plans to restore power with a generator, but has been delayed by the snow storm that hit the D.C. area earlier today.
“Facilities staff remain on campus throughout the night to continue working with PEPCO as soon as they arrive on campus,” he wrote. “This will take several hours to be delivered and installed. In the mean time, Lauinger and Sellinger Lounge have power and are available for your use.”
According to Nevils residents, the outage began at approximately noon. The University’s initial response to the outage? Distributing flashlights.
A number of options are available for students displaced by the power outage, wrote Killilee. Aside from staying with friends, he suggested that students take advantage of temporary housing in other parts of campus, or borrow an air mattress from the University.
[Editor's Note: I got an email from Housing earlier this evening offering up an empty room in my apartment for emergency housing. I live in Nevils.]
Earlier today LXR, Nevils and Walsh lost power. Facilities staff have been working all day to rectify this situation. In order to restore power to the complex, a generator is being brought in tonight. Facilities staff are working with PEPCO to rectify the situation. PEPCO staff are enroute but delayed due to inclement weather conditions. Facilities staff remain on campus throughout the night to continue working with PEPCO as soon as they arrive on campus. This will take several hours to be delivered and installed. In the mean time, Lauinger and Sellinger Lounge have power and are available for your use.
You may also choose to stay with friends until power is restored. We can offer temporary housing in current vacancies in rooms and apartments with other students. If you are staying in a temporary space, you will need to take bedding with you, and other supplies you may need. A limited number of air mattresses are available in the Center Grill area in the Leavey Center, past the food court heading to Starbucks, if you would like to borrow one. Please have your GOCard available if you choose to borrow one.
If you are interested in a temporary space for the night, please call (202) 687-4056 until 11 pm. After 11 pm, contact the RA on duty at (202) 288-9035. Please remember to lock your door before you leave the building. DPS is posted in the LXR and Nevils and patrolling the complex.
We will update you later this evening.
