Tuesday morning fire burns Washingtonian Auto Shop

A fire at the Washingtonian Auto Shop at Wisconsin and Q St. was likely started by a space heater, according to D.C. Fire and EMS Spokesman Pete Piringer.

Units were dispatched at 8:14 a.m. and the fire was declared “under control” at about 8:40 a.m., according to Piringer.

The fire spread quickly, and severely damaged the auto garage, along with several cars. The damage is now being assessed by the Department of Consumer and Regulatory Affairs.

The kitchen of neighboring restaurant Los Cuates was also damaged by fire and smoke and is closed for the time being. Health inspectors have been called to evaluate the damage to the restaurant.

The foam unit from the Naval District of Washington was called in to the fire as well, due to concerns about potential explosions, but it was not used.

Wisconsin Avenue and side streets were closed while units were fighting and the fire, and re-opened at 10:20 a.m.

  1. So long, gas station in the immediate Georgetown area selling gas about 30 cents cheaper than all of the surrounding competitors. Filling up at the station across the street for $3.99/gallon yesterday was pretty awful.

  2. Thanks a lot, Auto Shop. Now I get to miss out on delicious chile rellenos because you can’t figure out basic fire safety. Although, maybe Los Cuates can use this time to learn to make better margaritas.

  3. I hear ya occasional driver. And with the Exxon on Canal closing (not that I ever went there anyways), that leaves one gas station in the entire neighborhood.

  4. This is not the first time that space heaters have been held responsible for the burning down of buildings. Judging by the fact that the fire service was despatched at 8:14 a.m. suggests the heater may have been on all night. If that’s the case, take note there is a lesson there somewhere.
