University names Kevin O’Brien, S.J. VP of Mission and Ministry
Father Kevin O’Brien, S.J. (COL ’88), will assume the role of Vice-President of Campus Mission and Ministry, according to a University announcement from President John DeGioia. O’Brien currently serves as Executive Director of Campus Ministry, and his ascension to the Vice-Presidency will make him the sole Jesuit in senior administration.
“Fr. O’Brien will oversee the Office in its work to implement a variety of mission-focused programs, seminars, days of recollection, retreats and reflection series,” wrote DeGioia in an email to the student body. The University’s announcement comes less then three months after the departure of the previous VP of Mission and Ministry, Fr. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J., who left to assume the presidency of Holy Cross University.
Fr. O’Brien graduated from Georgetown in 1988 before earning his J.D. from the University of Florida. O’Brien served as a corporate lawyer before ultimately joining the Jesuits in 1996, earning a Master’s in Philosophy from Fordham along with a Master’s in Divinity and S.T.L. from Weston Jesuit School of Theology.
After being ordained as a priest in 2006, O’Brien served as an associate pastor at Holy Trinity Parish in Washington, D.C. before joining the administration of Campus Ministry in 2008. As director of Campus Ministry, O’Brien has overseen the ministries across all of the University’s campuses. Fr. O’Brien also currently serves as a chaplain-in-residence in Copley Hall.
