Comments of the week: I’m a bad, bad man
Posted by: Jackson Perry in Vox Populi, tags: Comments of the Week, Self Defense
Last week was a great week for Vox commenting—it would be impossible to highlight all the noteworthy comments from this week, so if you have some time to kill this President’s Day, Vox suggests you check out these posts about the GUSA election (one, two and three). This week’s post will therefore have a theme: Vox‘s reprehensible moral failings. Last Thursday, we published a photograph of the debate notes of GUSA vice presidential candidate Markel Starks (COL ’14), in which he wondered if he was hungry and played tic-tack-toe with himself. Not particularly respectful? Perhaps not. And the commentariat called us on it.
@wtf reminded me that I will have to explain my behavior to a higher power someday, or President DeGioia:
i totally agree “wtf” jackson this is pathetic you ought to be ashamed of yourself and be glad markel isn’t taking this to the administration or the cops as an invasion of privacy or hypothetically theft (my brother is a graduate of the law school, he and i had an interesting conversation about this). you have no moral codes, you have no ethical codes, and I have no clue how on earth you are going to defend yourself to God
Another @wtf gave us legal advice, but there’s no way someone using the word ‘behoove’ is speaking seriously.
Jackson Perry, you are walking dangerous legal lines, and it would highly behoove you to not break laws. I love vox populi, but this post is just unacceptable. no bullcrap.
Are we serious? thinks our blog post about Markel’s notes was promoted as investigative journalism. Au contraire monsieur, we have a hearty appreciation for tactless attempts at base humor!
This is absolutely disgraceful. What a bigoted, thoughtless article. Insult Markel’s *perceived* lack of intelligence all you want, but at least recognize that he is trying to do something good for Georgetown, whereas the author of this garbage is simply promoting such a tactless attempt at base humor as “investigative journalism.” The author might not think Markel is the best representation of Georgetown – but someone with such questionable moral and ethical standards, as displayed in this article, has absolutely no room to talk.
I think this was an attempt at humor. I think it’s safe to say that, in this case, very, very few people share in the author’s sense of humor.
And Markel Starks himself took us to task, suggesting that we’re playing right into his hands:
First, thanks so much for taking a picture of my paper. Classic. I have a hard time staying focus with repetitive things. Ask anybody that knows me. You guys want to focus on irrelevant details but you fail to point out that I answered all the questions thoroughly and with tact. Clearly, I did not need to write my thoughts out on paper because they were already formed in my mind. I was not distracted I was prepared, and I gave each opponent their due respect and attention. Also, do not compare me to Henry and his campaign. I love Henry, he’s my guy. He’s helped me in ways that people could not understand. So Henry this is not a shot at you Big Homie or your running mate. But it comes down to this…we are running two entirely different campaigns. We are by far more equiped than they were. So do not group us together. Moving forward… You guys are playing right into my hands so please continue with what you think are detrimental comments (LOL). At the end of the day, I know how great our campaign is. It is only a matter of time until the rest of the student body gets as bored as I was listening to the repetitive ideas of current GUSA representatives and is finally ready for a change. So please spend your time doing something constructive and focus on things that matter. Bottom line is, I take this seriously and I am prepared to handle and take on your poorly supported criticism and stereotypes. No more underhanded comments. It makes you look ludacris and just shows that I can handle this position. But on another note, I apologize for my actions if they offended you. I take full responsibility for what is on that note card. At the end of the day, I am here to make Georgetown more suitable for your preferences and needs, and that’s why I am running. Thanks again. Vote Dan and Markel.

It’s kind of amazing to me that you took the time to put those post together and managed not to reflect on or apologize for the original post. Your quip about the post being “base humor” instead of “investigative journalism” makes light of an important issue. You don’t seem to appreciate that a post combining a screenshot of a twitter post about markel starks hitting on a (white) girl and his note page with commentary insinuating that he’s dumb at best has racist undertones and at worst is overtly so. Your response comment on the original post seemed to be satirizing a satire and granted no credibility to what is clearly serious. I guess you don’t subscribe to the notions of journalistic ethics or fair and equal coverage, but if you or your institution took yourselves seriously you wouldn’t still be posting on this blog. But keep up the good work. You’re really funny. Thanks for saving Georgetown (and the world). The one thing we were missing was racist humor.
leave it to georgetown students to point out a blog’s inane stupidity…and then attack with an equally stupid charge of racism.
I’m a huge supporter of Dan and Markel, and even I have to admit that you guys are being a little too petty. If Markel doesn’t want these pictures posted up, he should try to stay focused during the debate, although he does “have trouble staying focus with repetitive things” (a quality that may not play to the strengths of the bureaucracy of GUSA). Most people think this is hilarious, and Markel’s attempts at playing it off like he’s the victim of some huge attack and lashing back at all the commenters rather than just manning up and saying, “yeah I was hungry, yeah I like to doodle, I find debates boring. But I’ve really got some good ideas,” has made him seem a tad ridiculous. Learn to take joke.
lol that dude blew it ^
You made a blog post with no context as to where you got the notes or what context the tweet came in, trying to portray Markel Starks as stupid and oversexed. I don’t think it’s a giant jump from that to wonder whether you’re a bigot for clearly trying to push stereotypes.
And at the same time, half of your GUSA debate live chat was devoted to which basketball players were attending and how interested they looked. You’re obviously obsessed with the basketball players as some sort of celebrity but have some issue with treating them as fellow students and peers.
