Men selected to finish second, women sixth at Big East Basketball Media Day

Georgetown v. Villanova basketball - 3On Wednesday, members of the new Big East Conference, including Georgetown, converged on New York for their annual Basketball Media Day. In the preseason coaches’ polls, the men’s team was picked to finish second out of ten teams and the women’s team was selected to finish sixth. The men’s team also received two first place votes. The complete men’s and women’s coaches polls are listed below.

Creighton senior forward Doug McDermott was selected as the conference’s Preseason Player of the Year, and St. John’s freshman guard Rysheed Jordan was named the conference’s Preseason Rookie of the Year. Georgetown senior guard Markel Starks, the only player on the men’s team to garner an award, was named to the Preseason All-Big East First Team.

For the women, Georgetown freshman forward Shayla Cooper was named Preseason Rookie of the Year and senior forward Andrea White earned a selection to the Preseason All-Big East Team. DePaul junior forward Brittany Hrynko earned Preseason Player of the Year honors.
