You’ve Been A Bad, Bad Hoya: White House staffer caught running snarky Twitter

Jofi Joseph has messed up. Big time.

Jofi Joseph (SFS ’94) just hit the wall. He almost had it all.

This erstwhile member of the National Security Council, a division of the executive branch that advises the President of the United States on matters of homeland security and foreign policy, was fired last week after he was unmasked as the snarky voice behind the extraordinarily caustic @NatSecWonk twitter handle, reported The Daily Beast.

By day, Joseph busied himself with formulating U.S. policy towards Iran and North Korea, as part of his work on the NSC’s nuclear non-proliferation team. By night, he turned to Twitter to ruthlessly criticize higher-ups in the Obama administration, his ideological opponents on the right, and other bigwigs in the national security and foreign policy scenes. So, when he tweeted “my friends call me batman,” he wasn’t too far of the mark.

To get an idea of just how, er, explicit Joseph was in his anonymized tweeting, Vox has included a fine selection of his musings below:

Whether or not you agree with Joseph’s justification that he “unapologetically says what everyone else only thinks,” it’s painfully obvious that this sort of behavior is not just unbecoming but also totally and wholly inappropriate for a public policy official.

In any event, this news has left Jospeh’s career in shambles. It’s a shame, too, give his impressive credentials: prior to joining the white house in 2009, he was a staffer on the powerful Senate Foreign Relations committee, where he worked closely with VP Joe Biden (wait, this breach of protocol thing is starting to make sense), and the primary foreign policy advisor to Senator Bob Casey (D-PA).

He was on track to land an important job at the Pentagon, where, according to The New York Times, he would have assisted in the buying of weapons. It’s a good riddance, though—Vox shudders at the thought of Joseph controlling military stockpiles, as he clearly can’t even handle his own tongue.

At the time of writing, @NatSecWonk has been shut down. Joseph also issued an apology to though Politico. “What started out as an intended parody account of D.C. culture developed over time into a series of inappropriate and mean-spirited comments. I bear complete responsibility for this affair, and I sincerely apologize to everyone I insulted,” he wrote.

It’s too late to apologize, Jofi. Too late.

  1. There is quite a sizable difference in being an NSC member and NSC staff. Mr. Joseph was the latter.

  2. Someone who went to Georgetown was sassy? The horror.
