Breaking: Students studying abroad in fall 2015 can participate in housing selection

Students rejoice, as they no longer have to fear living in the Quad junior year.

The Office of Residential Living sent an email this evening that said students planning to study abroad in the fall can participate in housing selection for this year, delaying the procedural change students discovered last week.

Following a GUSA resolution, Patrick Killilee, Executive Director for Residential Services, met with senators to clarify the change and to discuss possible options in light of student discontent with the change. For this year, all students can select housing then drop it if they choose to study abroad in the fall as they would have under the previous process.

“I’m very happy about it,” GUSA senator Ken Nunnenkamp (MSB ’16) told Vox. “I’m glad that we got the chance to speak with he administrators… and I’m also very glad that they thought the same way we did.”

The new process will remain for those in the class of 2017 and beyond, according to the email.

The GUSA resolution sought to delay the change, then re-examine it later on.

“I expect going forward we’ll be… bringing in freshmen, having them talk with the administration and see how this policy might affect them and then moving forward,” Nunnenkamp, who introduced the GUSA bill, said.
