Just the Tip: Loneliness and Hillternshipz

Dear Shay,

I’ve been feeling the summer blues. I miss my friends and my bestie is leaving for abroad. Also, I think I’m working way too hard. Halp plz!

Sincerely,
All-bi Mysalf

Hey All-bi Mysalf,

I’m really sorry to hear you’ve got the blues. But, you’ve really got to stop letting your non-issues (for almost everyone else) turn into something even marginally substantive–or else, you aren’t gonna have a fun semester! Even though your bestie is leaving for study abroad, I’ve heard there are plenty of online resources available for you to keep in touch with him/her. Even then, I strongly recommend being sociable and trying to “meet new people.” Of course, if you’re a shell of a human being and incapable of relating to anyone else, you could also try picking up a book! Open your mind to the wonders of a normal life with the sweet, healing literary nectar of authors like Flannery O’Connor and James Joyce–one can find a lot of enjoyment in solitary confinement with page turners from the likes of these other completely normal people! In terms of your working too hard: slow down, kid!! You’ve got your whole life ahead of you. Here’s what you might do for a little bit of perspective. Try stepping out of your new pair of expensive Nine West’s– for a pair of the rest of the hard-working and impoverished world’s non-shoe, basically horribly cut up and leathered soles! Soon enough, you’ll realize you’ve got it pretty good.

Godspeed,
Saschat

Dear Shayna,

I can’t decide whether to apply for this fall capitol hillternship. Should I sell my soul to the unpaid govt gods or get a real job?

Confused,
Go-or-no

Hola Go-or-no,

I’m not one for cliches, but in this situation, I’ve got to tell ya: follow your heart. Only a strong, blood pumping organ can make such an important decision like this! In fact, if I were to listen to my own coraçaozinho, I’d probably try to do both. I think it’s possible for you to try and get a part-time job, at least, in addition to the hillternship. That way, you’ll get the practical experience you need for a job in the future, with some extra dough to spend on the little free time you’ll have! Just remember, you gotta have fun.

Luv,
The Shalinator
