What better way to kick-off the men’s and women’s basketball season than with some free food?

On Friday, head over to the outdoor activities at Midnight Madness. Starting at 6:30 p.m. there will be free GUGS burgers for the first 250 people and free dominoes pizza.

If you think you can stand the heat, go to the Chile Pepper Tasting at the U.S. National Arboretum at 1:00 on Saturday to taste some of the world’s hottest chiles and try out different chile-based foods.

Also on Saturday, learn to hula at the National Arboretum at the Hula with Mokihana program. There won’t be any free food, but the ticket is free and the audience will be invited to participate in the dance! There will be two shows on Saturday, one at 9am and one at 11am.

Read on after the jump about how to win pies.

This week, Homecoming and Traditions Day are featuring a series of probably fun events that will also have free food. Here’s the breakdown of the events, and which ones can provide you with your free food fix.

Friday, September 28th – Traditions Day (hosted by The Office of Advancement and the Senior Class Committee)

9 a.m. Bagels and Coffee from The Corp (Red Square): Start your morning off the way it usually does with bagels and coffee from The Corp – except for free.

12 p.m. GUGS burgers (Copley Lawn): You know it’s Friday when the smell of GUGS burgers is in the air, you know it’s homecoming weekend when you eat them for free.

– Local food traditions (Red Square): Enjoy the best of Georgetown and M Street restaurants without the usual heavy price tag. We recommend taking a food break to dunk fellow Hoyas in the dunk tank. [Voice Sports Editor Kevin Joseph will be in the dunk tank for those of you who disagree with any of his latest Sports Sermons.]

1 p.m. Wingo’s Eating Contest (Copley Lawn): This wing joint is so well loved by Hoyas that it has become a tradition in itself. Prove that you’re a true Wingo’s fanatic by winning this eating contest.

Other Traditions Day events (sans free food, but still very awesome) include Powderpuff games, Georgetown trivia, and performances by your favorite a cappella groups and other student groups.

America kicks of the month of June with National Doughnut Day. The day was created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to celebrate women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.

Get excited, because this means free food for all:

At Dunkin’ Donuts, you can get a free doughnut, but only if you purchase a beverage. Lame. Closest location near Georgetown: Foggy Bottom, 616 23rd Street Northwest

Krispy Kreme, on the other hand, is offering free, adult, uncensored doughnuts with no questions asked. Closest location: Dupont Circle, 1350 Connecticut Ave NW

Things you can do with doughnuts: Sure, you can just eat a doughnut whole, or you could get a little creative. Cut it in half and put a cheeseburger in the middle (see photograph). Dip a doughnut in your coffee. Get a free doughnut and give it to your boss. Nah, don’t do that one. Unless you’re expecting a raise.

Perhaps you didn’t leave for the long weekend, or maybe mid-semester stir craziness has already kicked in, either way perhaps the international flair of this week’s free food will soothe you.

If intellectual celebrations are your kind of festivity, then perhaps the events of this Friday’s revelries for the 150th unification of Italy are for you. Starting at 9:30 a.m. in Lohrfink Auditorium, the Department of Italian along with the Italian Embassy will be hosting a series of lectures with topics ranging from the theater and music of Italy to the identities of Italian-Americans, along with delicious snacks and coffee to accompany the revels.

Lectures aren’t for everyone, and if a more worldly approach to your free food still appeals to you, then maybe Egypt Fest DC is for you. Described as Egypt coming to Washington, the festivities will include belly dancing, traditional flute and drum music, raffles for vacations, and authentic Egyptian food. Head over to Yards Park from 12 to 8 p.m. this Saturday for the chance to indulge in an Egyptian treat, hosted by the Embassy of Egypt.

To Infinity and… Popcorn!

As the generation who grew up with Woody, pretended to be Buzz Lightyear blasting off into space, and cracked up at Mr. Potato Head’s snarkiness, we can’t turn down one last Toy Story adventure. (Accompanied by appropriate movie theater munchies, of course.)

This Friday at 7:30 p.m. on the Copley Lawn, GUAA and Student Affairs will screen the final chapter of the Toy Story series. We’ll be there—reminiscing at the past glory of our youth, chowing down on popcorn and cotton candy, and probably crying during the movie’s third act.

Gleekful Noms

So, there’s apparently there’s a show called Glee that’s tapped into the nation’s love of a capella. To celebrate the show’s season premiere, GPB is hosting a watch party in the Village C Alumni Lounge on Tuesday, beginning at 7:30 p.m. As if the Alumni Lounge’s five big screen TVs isn’t enough to tempt you, GPB promises snacks, a costume contest, singing competition, and trivia.

Come Home to Bagels

Homecoming is this weekend and while there’ll be plenty of entertainment—Mr. Georgetown, anyone?—you may not want to spend money after splurging on a Homecoming ticket.  So, why not ease your wallet with a free bagel brunch hosted by the Program for Jewish Civilization? Check it out next Sunday from 10 a.m. until noon in the ICC Galleria.

Actually being in the SFS or Jewish: not necessary. A love of carbohydrates: required.

(And, as a reminder, the Bioethics Research Library’s “Cookie Friday” is still happening.

NOM NOM NOM

The Bioethics Research Library invented the world’s most perfect name for their weekly food giveaway: Cookie Friday. From 4 to 5 p.m. every Friday, the library, located in Healy 102, will serve free cookies to any students and faculty who wander inside.

Who doesn’t like a cookie to start the weekend?

Gamer’s Gambit

Do you miss lazing around, playing video games, and chowing down? Well, you’re in luck. At game night in the Village C Alumni Lounge, you can play Halo to your heart’s delight. (And after those thumbs get sore, you can gorge on some free food.)

Since Leo’s doesn’t even offer late night on Fridays, this event is sure to please your empty stomach and your inner gamer nerd.

“I’m a simple man, I like pretty, dark-haired women and breakfast foods.”

If you’re a simple man like Ron Swanson, then head on over to Leo’s on Thursday from 10 p.m. until midnight, when What’s After Dark, Dining Services, Student Affairs, and the Freshman and Sophomore Class Committees will be hosting Georgetown’s semiannual Midnight Breakfast.

Although it is typical Leo’s food, it will be served by some of the favorite professors and faculty on campus—and it’s free!  So put down your books and take a little break before the first day of finals.

Or as Ron Swanson eloquently said, “I will take a free breakfast buffet any time, any place.”

One more reason to stop studying

First day of finals stress you out?  Don’t have any exams for a few days?  Then stop by What’s After Dark and ResLife’s Study Break: Georgetown in Wonderland on Friday from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m.  The free activities will be happening in the Leavey Center lobby, Hoya Court, and the Leavey Program Room.  Vox recommends you get a free massage, play some mini golf, go bro-tastic and play corn hole, or decorate some delicious cupcakes.  Everyone needs a study break, so why pass up some free food and events?

As anyone who hasn’t spent the last month in the lower level of Lau knows, tomorrow is Georgetown Day, the day when the entire University comes together to throw the biggest party of the year on the Hilltop. As Vox let you know the other day, the alcohol policy has become noticeably stricter this year.

So, what is there to do on Georgetown Day? Here are a few recommendations for what to do when you’re not in the concession area or trying to hide a drink from DPS.

Entertainment

  • Dunk Tank (12 to 4 p.m.): Come and dunk some of Georgetown’s campus celebrities! Vox’s own Molly Redden will be in the tank from 1 to 1:30 p.m. Will Not Greg Monroe or Tim make an appearance to show Molly how much they miss her by dunking her? Check out the full list of dunk tank participants here.
  • Improv (2 p.m.): Miss the last Improv performance in Bulldog Alley? No worries, because the Georgetown Players Improv Group will be performing on the new Dahlgren Quad stage early in the afternoon.
  • Bungee run (11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.): Ever want to be thrown backward by a bungee cord into an inflatable? Well, here’s your chance! The bungee run is among the inflatables that will be out on the lawn that also includes an obstacle course.
  • Jack’s Wings Eating Contest (12 p.m.): Will contestants jack wings like Vox suspected when this was announced?  Can people handle actually eating that much Wingo’s? Show up to find out, but be warned—if the contestants don’t puke, we figure you will after watching people eat that many wings.
  • Guild of Bands (3:30 to 6 p.m.): Want to hear a bunch of bands in one place? Then check out this performance on the Healy stage, which will showcase Georgetown student bands.

After the jump, find out about some of the Georgetown Day’s best free food and the complete event schedule.

Things have generally been quiet in the Burrito War between M Street’s Qdoba and Chipotle. But no longer: this Saturday Chipotle started giving free drinks to anyone with a student ID. According to a manager at Chipotle, the promotion will continue indefinitely.

This isn’t exactly a drastic move for Chipotle, especially given that Qdoba has offered free drinks for students since it opened. It’s a good start, but they’ll have to up their game if they have any hope of competing with Qdoba’s half-price Mondays.
