View Campus Crime, November, 2012 in a larger map
This November, 49 violent and property crimes were reported to Georgetown’s Department of Public Safety. The vast majority of incidences were thefts of unattended property. A total of 12 laptops were stolen this month, prompting DPS to begin a campaign for laptop safety, which included offering students the laptop protection software LoJack at a reduced rate, and reminding students not to leave their laptops unattended. Vox offered some of its own solutions to the issue.

Earlier this morning, several laptops were stolen from a student’s residence on the 3300 block of Prospect Street NW. According to an email from the Department of Public Safety, the residents were not home at the time of the burglary. The alert also added that there were no signs of “forced entry.” The incident occurred between 10:50-11:45 a.m.
Two weeks ago, a student was robbed close to the location of today’s incident, between 33rd and Prospect Street.
DPS requests that anyone who has information regarding this incident, or who noticed any suspects before or after the incident, contact them immediately at (202) 687-4343.

A Georgetown employee contacted the Department of Public Safety at approximately 3:30 p.m. today to report a stolen backpack. The backpack, along with the laptop it held, was taken from an unlocked office in the Reiss Science Building. The public safety alert states the employee left the office at around 10:30 this morning and returned five hours later to find the laptop missing.
Today’s theft marks the second laptop theft in Reiss this month, with the other occurring less than two weeks ago. With both incidents, DPS reports that there were no signs of forced entry or physical injury. The Metropolitan Police Department responded to today’s theft and has also taken over investigation of the May 11 burglary.
The announcement requests that students call DPS at 202-687-4343 if they noticed any suspects before or after this, or any other incident.

Today at around 8:20 a.m. a Georgetown employee reported that a laptop was stolen from an office in the Reiss Science Building. According to the public safety report, the employee had left the laptop in the office at around 5:40 p.m. yesterday afternoon, and when he returned this morning it was missing.
There were no physical injuries reported, and according to DPS, evidence indicates there was no forced entry into the office. At the time, the Metropolitan Police Department was contacted and went to the scene. No suspects have been identified yet.
The announcement reminds students that they should call DPS at 202-687-4343 regarding any safety concerns.

At approximately 2:30 a.m. yesterday, a Georgetown student confronted an unidentified male with a backpack inside his Henle Village residence. The man said he was looking for someone, and the student “escorted” him out of the apartment, according to a public safety alert. The student eventually learned that one of his roommates’ laptop was missing. The Department of Public Safety responded to the scene, and discovered no sign of forced entry.
The public safety alert describes the suspect as a six-foot black male, wearing a red baseball cap and a black jacket, and carrying a black backpack.
DPS requests that anyone who has information regarding this incident, or who noticed any suspects before or after the incident, to contact them immediately at (202) 687-4343.

At approximately 9:15 a.m. today, a University employee reported to the Department of Public Safety that a laptop was stolen from a classroom in the White Gravenor Building.
According to the public safety alert, DPS investigators have deduced that forced entry was made to steal the laptop. The employee had left the laptop in its case in the locked classroom last Thursday at 1:15 p.m.. When she returned this morning, the burglary was discovered. There are no known suspects in the incident, which occurred at some point between Thursday afternoon and this morning.

Another year, another laptop theft.
According to an email sent to the University community early this morning by the Department of Public Safety, an unidentified suspect stole a laptop from an “uninhabited” room in Harbin Hall. According to the email, a suspicious person was seen in the building, but canvassing of the area by both DPS and Metro Police failed apprehend or identify him. The suspect is described as a black male between the ages of 19 and 21, of thin build, and about 5’8″ to 5’10″. He was seen wearing “a navy blue ball cap with a red bill, a black hooded jacket, blue jeans rolled at the cuffs, and black boots.”
The report does not specify whether the door to the room was locked, but it does include that “there were no signs of forced entry.” Anyone with information regarding this incident is should call DPS at (202) 687-4343.

On Tuesday, May 24, 2011, at around 2:45 p.m., a room in Kennedy was burglarized.
According to a public safety alert, a student left his room around 2:45 p.m. He asserts that he secured his door. However, when the student returned at 3:00 p.m., he found his door unsecured, two laptops and an iPod missing, and his clothing in disarray.
The student reported the incident to DPS. No suspects or witnesses were identified. DPS asks anyone with any information regarding this incident to call (202) 687-4343.

On Tuesday, May 3, at approximately 10:30 a.m., two houses on the 1300 block of 33rd Street were burgled.
According to a public safety alert, a Georgetown staff member reported the crimes that three laptop computers and an mp-3 player were stolen from the first house, which the burglar entered through an unopened door. The screen door was cut on the second house, but nothing appeared to be missing.
Although a witness made contact with a potential suspect as he was leaving, no description was given, and MPD has not apprehended any suspects.
