The Georgetown Hoyas opened their season with a dominating 83-54 victory over the Savannah State Tigers at the Verizon Center.  The unranked Hoyas needed some time to get going today, starting out slow and letting Savannah State cut the lead to three early in the second half.  After that, the Hoyas turned it on, cruising the rest of the half and scoring 51 of their points in the frame.

Henry Leads the Way

Georgetown’s senior center said this season would be different, but now opponents must starting paying attention.  Henry Sims scored 19 points to go along with six rebounds, three blocks, and five assists in his most complete game as a Hoya.  Sims left the game with four minutes remaining to a standing ovation from the Verizon Center crowd.  After the game, Savannah State head coach Horace Broadnax admitted his team did not really prepare for Sims, as they just went on his mediocre play of years past.

Freshmen Step Up

Head coach John Thompson III said from the get-go that the freshmen would play a considerable amount and today, they did.  Otto Porter led the way for the group with his full stat line – nine points, eight boards, and three blocks – playing almost like a third big man at times for the Hoyas.  He was simply everywhere the ball was during his time on the floor.  Greg Whittington had a stretch where he drained two three-pointers and Mikael Hopkins established himself in the paint late in the game.  Thompson was happy with their play, saying they all “did things,” meaning they contributed to the full team effort.  Tyler Adams did not play today, as he is still hobbled by a sprained ankle.  Thompson said he is day-to-day and could have played today if they desperately needed him.
