While we await the completion of the H Street streetcar line, now expected to begin running by mid 2013, some area blogs are drooling over the idea of extending the line into Georgetown.

Last week, Georgetown Metropolitan ran a historical post about Georgetown’s cable car history, through the architecture of Georgetown’s own Car Barn.

A day before, Greater Greater Washington drooled over the idea of extending the as-yet-unfinished H Street Streetcar line into Georgetown, ending at the GUTS bus stop at Southwest Quad. In addition, GGW offered the idea of building a satellite campus in Northeast Washington, since the University built its School of Continuing Studies in Claredon.

GGW believes that the extension would create better access to jobs for District residents, and that a campus in Northeast D.C. would create GU jobs in Washington, as opposed to moving out of the city. Streetcars in Georgetown could also bring more shoppers into Georgetown and improve retail business. The post also posts that a Streetcar wouldn’t harm historic preservation, and would decrease congestion.

Getting a Streetcar line to actually run through Georgetown would be quite the feat, given the way that many Georgetown residents reject the idea of a Metro line, and didn’t even want GUTS buses going near their parks.

Monday night DC Students Speak kicked off the academic year by hosting Fiona Greig, a prospective DC Council candidate form Ward 2. Dr. Greig, a fan of smart growth and ethics reform who holds a Ph.D. in public policy from Harvard, would be running against Jack Evans for her seat, so she started off on a good foot. One of the major issues that faces the Council, according to Greig is the widespread corruption. She says that DC suffers from “part-time” government, as indicated by the numerous financial scandals current councilmembers have been involved in. With the district cash-strapped as ever, inappropriate uses of money are unacceptable.

Greig, herself car free, is a huge proponent of smart growth. She supports the proposed streetcar that would connect east and west DC, and she would like to expand the Metro system. (Greig would also like a Georgetown station, and that may be more possible than previously thought). When asked if she would support student discounts for public transportation, she was hesitant to agree because Metro’s bottom line and ability to serve distinct communities outweigh the interests of one population.

Greig took a more pragmatic than pandering stance when it came to the campus plan. To her, Georgetown University is a permanent interest and should be treated like one, especially since it is DC’s largest employer. Greig says that quelling the university’s growth is not good because the city could use the jobs.

Currently Greig is still in the exploratory phase of her committee campaign, and she is looking for on-campus volunteers to join her campaign. She doesn’t have a website up yet, so in the mean time, you can like her on Facebook.

The District Department of Transportation is undertaking a massive effort to install 37 miles of streetcar tracks in D.C. That includes uncertain plans to run a streetcar line up Wisconsin Avenue, connected to the line that will run down K Street and Benning Road to the H Street NE corridor, shown in red on the map at right.

A group of Georgetown residents, however, are trying to turn the potential line into a sure thing. They’re called the Wisconsin Avenue Streetcar Coalition, and they want DDOT to make firm plans to route a streetcar through Georgetown.

Of course, as with any local ambitious project, there’s a lot of anxiety surrounding this issue.

Ben Thielen, who is heading up the Coalition, wrote on the wall of the WASC Facebook page that a member of the Tenley neighborhood listserv posted a Human Transit article to erode support for the streetcar. (The article argued that streetcars aren’t any faster than buses.) Meanwhile, he’s suspicious that upcoming construction on Wisconsin Avenue near Glover Park will impede streetcar tracks, and Glover Park residents are questioning how serious about the possbility of expansion DDOT really is in the Gazette (PDF).

For its part, the Voice is internally divided over whether a streetcar is such a good idea. In the Fall, the editorial board warned that streetcars were a foolish thing to pursue, considering that DDOT has enormous year-to-year budget shortfalls. In his feature story about the up-and-coming Atlas District, however, Chris Heller pointed out that the connectivity a streetcar line offers can mean big things for individual D.C. neighborhoods.
