Joan Didion would be horrified. Earlier this month, real estate blog Movoto released yet another Preppiest-Cities-In-The-Country list that was topped by San Francisco, of all places. What?
While there’s no surprise that our fair District made the top ten, the list was compiled based on criteria including everything from “number of preppy clothing retailers per capita” to “country clubs per capita” and “presence of boarding/preparatory schools” located within the city lines (no “Metro Area” here). These criteria were then checked against Yelp, Yellowpages.com, the elitist Yachtclub.com, and Boardingschool.com to get a sense of the number of said institutions in each city. In a nutshell, Ralph Lauren + German car dealerships + per capita collared shirts – Whole Foods – thrift stores = Preppy Mecca.
In their write-up, Movoto themselves mention that, “A huge factor in overall preppiness is simply looking the part.” Curiously, also included in the top ten preppiest cities are the likes of Honolulu, Seattle, and Portland, not to mention the city to which Ms. Didion penned Slouching Towards Bethlehem, San Francisco.
