Many things stopped for Hurricane Sandy: campus was closed, classes were cancelled, and parts of the New York City subway system shut down for the first time in its history. But has the Georgetown women’s soccer team slowed their roll in the Big East? Not a chance.
The Hoyas were out in full force on Sunday as they beat DePaul University 1-0 at North Kehoe Field in the quarterfinal match of the Big East tournament. Players and officials alike kept an eye on the sky as the Hoyas opened with aggressive play, winning two free kicks in the opening three minutes of the game.
Georgetown’s goal would come in the ninth minute when Daphne Corboz delivered the Hoyas’ third corner kick. Her delivery found its way to freshman midfielder Marina Paul. Paul promptly headed the ball into the box and junior forward Colleen Dinn knocked the ball into the net using the back of her head.
Try as they might, the Hoyas couldn’t capitalize on any of the other chances they created during the first half. A notable miss came in the 17th minute when Corboz had a soaring shot saved by DePaul goalkeeper Megan Pyrz. Pyrz again denied her in the 30th minute.
DePaul only managed one decent effort on goal when Amber Paul took a shot that was easily saved by goalkeeper Emma Newins. Their lack of chances carried over into the second half where Georgetown outshot DePaul 7-3. Sophomore Jessica Clinton and junior Mary Kroening would both see attempts on goal come to nothing.

Georgetown junior Ingrid Wells has selected to go to the US Women’s Soccer Under-23 National Team training camp.
The two-time Big East midfielder of the year recently traveled to California for the camp. With 22 goals and 34 assists in her first three seasons at Georgetown, Wells is the Georgetown all-time assists leader and two short of the all-time points leader.
This is not her first encounter with the national team, after winning with 2008 World Cup with the under-20 squad. ”There are different players and it’s a different coach, so that’s an adjustment,” Wells said told Georgetown Athletics. “I’m more comfortable since I have been through this before, but you still have to go out and prove yourself. Everyone is really good.”

Earlier this week, Junior forward Camille Trujillo (COL ’12) was named the nation’s Top Drawer Soccer Player of the Week.
The honor comes after the women’s soccer team’s historic upset against the University of Maryland in the second round of the NCAA Tournament, where Trujillo scored a tie-breaking goal in the 51st minute of the game.
Trujillo, who was previously named to the All-Big East second team, has already set Georgetown’s single-season record with 13 goals this year. After winning its first-ever NCAA post-season game against Siena on Friday, the Georgetown women’s soccer team kicked it up a notch against Maryland to advance to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA tournament.
The Hoyas rode the momentum of a 5-1 drubbing into Sunday’s beltway battle against the Terrapins at Ludwig Field on Maryland’s campus. The Terrapins ranked 6th in nation and were heavily favored entering the contest, but their pedigree wasn’t enough against the Hoyas’ experience and tenacity.
