Westboro Baptist Church to protest at GW, students organize counter protest

To Georgetown students, George Washington University is a neighboring university and an opponent on the winter battlefield.

To the members of the Westboro Baptist Church—a Kansas-based hate mongering extremist group run by Fred Phelps—however, GW brings to mind the phrase “God-hating heathens.”

According to the group’s website, the WBC will be in Foggy Bottom on the morning of November 11th—Veteran’s Day—to “remind this nation that this next generation of young people have been raised for the devil himself.” Afterward, the group plans to protest at Arlington National Cemetery.

The GW Patriot, a non-partisan student blog, decided not to idly stand by when they found out about the scheduled protest. Last Friday, the Patriot announced that they will lead a counter protest during the WBC’s picketing. The counter protest’s Facebook event prominently notes that their event will be non-violent to “show WBC the meaning of sane, rational discourse.”

“If there’s one thing that unites the entire political spectrum—liberals and conservatives, Democrats and Republicans—it’s opposition to the extreme beliefs Westboro preaches,” the event listing says.

While we squabble with GW from time to time, we urge our readers to attend the Patriot‘s counter protest. (As long as there’s no snow on the ground.)

  1. wbc is a true church theyprotest the pagans and religonists who all think we are victims ofcircumstances and think there is no God of wrath.you might as well listen to them for today s students and military veterans the only hope is making it to your next keg party.

  2. the westboro baptist church has the freedom of speech, and you fags should use your own tolerance fuckyou fags

  3. To the members of Westboro Baptist Church – I have something that I hope you’ll think about. Every one of us are sinners. That means you and that means me. I’m not proud of that but it’s the way it is. While we can’t avoid sin everytime, our primary objective should always be to live our lives right as best we can. Know that your sins adversely effect the world as much as mine or that of anyone else. I’m not here to discuss homosexuality because in my opinion, it can’t cause every bad thing that goes on. What about greed? To me, that’s one of the worst sins. Look at what greed has done to the world. The greedy have moved their businesses outside the country where they pay those people slave wages ( 50cents/hour or less ) and we’re still paying the same if not more as before. People have lost their jobs due to greed and others are working hard with nothing to show for it in these other countries. I hope you understand that it’s not just one sin that’s made the world what it is today. It’s a combination of all of our sins. Finally, I’ve heard Shirley Phelps speak on the radio about funerals being our way of worship for the dead. In truth, it’s not worship of the dead but a means of closure and letting go and that’s all. Remember that only God can pass final judgement on our souls – meaning Heavan or Hell. God reserves that right and it’s his and his alone. No man or woman will inform me of whether or not I’m a Christian. I don’t think I am. I know I am.

  5. There is no god! it’s not very complicated. now can we actually move on and focus on doing something worthwhile with our lives?

  6. “I disagree with your opinion, but i will defend to the death your right to go fuck yourself”

  7. I love it when the westboro people show up. Counter-protesting them for Carlin’s Kennedy Center awards was great. Everyone was so supportive!

I think they have done more for gay rights than most in this country. People see them and realize how absurd such hatred is. They don’t want to be like them, so they examine their own prejudices.

  8. Wow just went to their website linked above. Totally thought it was a joke website at first. I’m afraid they’re actually serious though. Wow just wow. I can’t believe there are people that insane out there. Scary.

  9. I just wanted to say that I’m proud of all you young adults out there who worked on the counter protest against Westboro. You’ve shown that you can think for yourselves and that brain washing isn’t in your vocabulary. I’m going to leave this conversation because I think it was probably more intened you the young people who put the counter protest together. Plus, WBC gets me so mad that I see red so the less I think about them the better. Thank you to the students who worked on this project. It’s people like you that make a difference.

  10. I kissed another boy in front of them once to piss them off. We got applause from the crowd.

  11. Why do people continue to give this fringe group, made of literally one family from Topeka, attention?

  12. the westboro baptist church are a bunch of inbred hicks and they are also a disgrace to this country they are heartless vile scumbags and they are nothing but trash fred phelps is lowlife piece of shit

  14. I really can’t believe the Democrat Party hasn’t distanced themselves from this Phelps, who was a big Gore supporter and fundraiser not to mention a candidate for multiple offices in the Democratic Party. They need to expel him. In fact, it’s even too late for that now. This is a homegrown terrorist so why are they silent on it?

  16. The Westboro Baptist church has something like 70 members.
Commence ignoring them until they inbreed themselves out of the human race.

  17. @phoenix- not a propagandist at all. Yes, we all do sin. Yes, we may all go to hell, but I doubt that God would send us to hell for, say, taking a penny off the ground, or waking up late for a day, it all has to balance out with the good that we do. I wonder how much good these Westboro bastards have done.
    P.S. Love the sign man!

  18. While I don’t support or accept Homosexuality as right or normal isn’t it a bit extreme to upset others at a funeral of a fallen US soldier?
Please let the fallen have a final day of peace with their grieving families and let our awesome God be the Judge.
Homosexuality is a sin yeah, but haven’t we’ve all sinned in one way or another?
MATHEW 7:5 Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.

  19. After getting past my extreme anger about the protests at military funerals, I wondered what I could do. I decided to send them a VERY polite letter requesting that they stop those protests, noting that the the families of the soldiers had done nothing to further the cause of rights for homosexuals. If a lot of people did this, they will have a lot of mail sorting on their hands to find their electric bills. Their address is Westboro Baptist Church, 3701 SW 12th St, Topeka KS 66604.

  20. Why does no one ever call child protective services to get the kids away from these nut jobs? They make Charlie Sheen look like father of the year.

  21. If you guys knew anything about the First Amendment and freedom of speech, you’d know that there are reservations to the right of free speech, read up on your law before you throw it in peoples faces.

  22. The WBC does have the right to freedom of speech as does everyone in the USA. However just because you have the right doesn’t mean you should abuse it. I personally believe the law should be adjusted to prevent dumb crap like this from happening because what the WBC says and believes is completely wrong and horrible. If I was the father of one of those homosexual soldier’s who’s funeral was protested I personally would hit all those bastards in the face because thats just awful what they are doing.

  23. Why does no one ever call child protective services to get the kids away from these nut jobs? They make Charlie Sheen look like father of the year.
    Yeah your right WTF?!?!?
