Get your Jesuit on: Jesuit Heritage Week 2014 kicks off Sunday
Starting this Sunday, it is all about cura personalis on the Hilltop as the campus celebrates Jesuit Heritage Week. All of the events, which include the exploration of spirituality, social justice, and the arts—and even the chance to spike a Jesuit in the face with a volleyball—have been planned and organized by your fellow Georgetown students. Vox suggests you take this as an opportunity to learn more about the founding identity of the University (and also get to know some really cool Jesuits) over the next seven days.
Sunday: Kicking off the week is the Opening Festival Mass in Gaston Hall at 8:00 p.m. which will feature the University’s Chapel, Contemporary, and Gospel Choirs. A celebratory reception will directly follow Mass at 9 p.m.
Monday: Come join Father Kevin O’Brien and Father Tom Michel of Georgetown’s Doha campus for a dialogue on the value of the Jesuit education within their respective communities. Want some mid-day rest and relaxation? Father Brian McDermott will discuss meditation and Ignatian spirituality at McSherry Hall at 12:30. And nothing says “cura personalis” like cheering on the Hoyas at the Verizon Center as they take down our Catholic brethren/nemesis, Villanova.
Tuesday: At 7:30 p.m. in the ICC auditorium, the founder and Executive Director Father Greg Boyle of Homeboy Industries, the largest gang-intervention program in the U.S., will explain his story and the success of his L.A.-based organization.
Wednesday: An Ignatian Twilight Retreat and dinner for students will be held from 6:30 p.m. – 8:30 p.m.: if interested, RSVP to firstname.lastname@example.org. And the event you have all been waiting for: the ultimate volleyball battle between Jesuits and students to determine who will take home the coveted Spike-a-Jesuit trophy. Come to the volleyball courts in Yates at 9:00 p.m. to take back the title from the Jesuits.
Thursday: Learn how Jesuit values have influenced the life decisions of students, professors, and scientists in the medical and healthcare fields at a discussion in McShain Lounge in McCarthy from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m.
There are many more events throughout the week from the 26th to the 1st, so keep your eyes peeled and check out the full list here to get your Jesuit on.
