Big Sean to perform in GPB’s 2014 Spring Kickoff Concert

The Georgetown Programming Board announced yesterday on their Facebook page that Big Sean will bring his hip hop from the west side of Detroit to Georgetown students in this year’s Spring Kickoff Concert.

Born in California and raised from a young age in Detroit, Michigan, Big Sean, born Sean Michael Leonard Anderson, began rapping in high school. In 2005, when Kanye West was giving an interview at a local radio station, Big Sean pleaded West to hear his lyrics. West agreed to hear 16 bars of Sean’s rap as he walked out of the station.

“I remember Kanye looking at my face while I was rapping, and I got so nervous, I just started looking at the ground,” he told Metro Times. “I’m thinking, ‘Man, don’t mess up!’ And I spit every rap I could remember that was good.” Two years later, Big Sean signed onto West’s music label, G.O.O.D. Music.

Released in late Aug. 2013, his newest album, Hall of Fame, was on MTV’s list of the most anticipated albums of 2013. Featuring guest appearances by artists such as Nicki Minaj and Lil Wayne, the album was released to critical acclaim and widespread popularity. Its lead single, “Beware” featuring Lil Wayne, peaked at number 38 on the Billboard Hot 100. “Fire,” produced with a music video starring Miley Cyrus, peaked at number 19 on the Billboard Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles.

Big Sean’s experiences in Detroit drive his rap. “I feel like the city definitely has made an impact on my life and made me who I am. Detroit has an unmistakeable soul — nobody can duplicate the soul we bring to the game,” he told The Huffington Post. “It’s definitely a city that’s full of originality and the fact that I can be a vessel of that. As far as I think, it had a lot to do shaping me as a man.”

Supporting act White Panda, a duo act that has produced 27 Internet radio hit singles, will also perform at GPB’s concert. White Panda was one of music service Soundcloud’s top five most-played artists in 2011.

The concert will be held on April 4, 2014 at the McDonough Gymnasium from 9 p.m. to 11 p.m. Tickets will be sold for $20 for those with a GoCard and $35 for those without.
